Fine cutlery for the foodie… by Christofle

I’ve been absent for quite some time. Working at a start up usually leaves little time for leisure, so I decided to give my blog a rest. However, since I am also taking quite a number of professional photographs for Boulesse.com I decided to share some, especially because they fit my blog in the foodie category ;-) We recently had a photoshoot with some exquisite tableware pieces from our shops. The most funny thing about it was the actual light situation (dark cloudy sky) and the outcome (sunny, well lit), apart from the fact that one of our software developers worshipped the silver plated Christofle MOOD cutlery set during the time with us… So let’s start with it, as I also think this is one of the most interesting pieces of tableware that we sell. It’s a silver plated egg shaped thing, holding a 24pc cutlery set for 6 persons. You get a fork, knife, table spoon and tea spoon, all silver-plated too of course! The hot pink smoothie – my latest obsession

If you follow me on Instagram you will have seen a few of my hot pink smoothies. While I love fruits in general there is something magical about blending several delicious ingredients and being able to gulp the result down faster than you can peel an apple. Usually though, my smoothies aren’t that photogenic. However, I got the idea to blend some left over red dragonfruit into a smoothie and have been hooked on that fruit eversince. While the taste is more on the mild side the color and nutrients are extraordinary. Red dragonfruit flesh isn’t simply red, it’s a deep magenta that adds a distinctive color to every smoothie. But dragonfruit isn’t only visually appealing, it also contains a powerful antioxidant called indicaxanthin. For these reasons I pimped my last few smoothies with a healthy dose of red dragonfruit and look at the results: An exquisite blend of strawberries, mango, watermelon, red dragonfruit, ground cherries and jackfruit. This concoction is actually a simple banana milk, with added red dragonfruit just for color. The taste wasn’t much different from regular banana milk. The third drink looks very much like the first, but apart from the watermelon and dragonfruit it is made up of different ingredients: red dragonfruit, papaya, banana, raspberries, muscat grapes and watermelon. Macaroom – Review

Now I’m arriving at the most pleasant part of the Street Kitchen Food Market, Macaroom. Their macarons were a real positive surprise to me. After trying the Laakronen of Oberlaa, a fairly reputable bakery in Vienna I gave up on finding decent macaroons here. McDonalds Caramel ones being the best I had in this town… Macaroom manages to get the shell the way it’s supposed to. Slighty crunchy and gooey when necessary (salted caramel!). Packing great taste with the filling (hello vanilla and lemon poppyseed!). They really are able to compete with Ladurée and Pierre Hermé that I always eat when in France and any other country that has those two famed French maisons. Oh my, there were a few that lacked a bit in the flavor department, but most were excellent. So excellent that I deem Macaroom the best in town. Absolutely. To aid my own failing memory I will quickly type up each flavor I tried and a comment for future macaroon binges. – Pistacchio: I’m not usually a pistacchio flavor fan, but this one is really good, lots of great nutty flavor. Highly recommend – Salted Caramel: Oh my god. My very favorite. Chewy towards the center and full of caramel goodness, just as I like it. The only thing they could improve is to make a sticky caramel filling instead of the caramel cream. Just a suggestion, would still buy them without changes. McDonalds can go home with its sweeter version that lacks in the caramel flavor department by comparison. – Chestnut: One of the few “meh” ones. The flavor wasn’t intense enough and while I know that chestnuts aren’t as heavily flavored as e.g. caramel there is still room for improvement. Or simply a different flavor. Like rose, or Ispahan… my very very favorite dessert flavors lol. – Chocolate lemon ginger: Again, not usually a fan of such a combination (fruit with chocolate is a no no for me, I don’t like sour combined with chocolate at all). But if you do you will really like this one. Very well balanced flavors. – Peanut Butter: flavorful, yummy, everything a PB fan likes. Now please make one with grape jam inbetween ;-) – Raspberry: This one was a real let down. Compared to the jam filled versions this one lost because it was filled with a light raspberry cream and lacked the fruityness I would expect. I don’t now why, but have the feeling Macaroom is not a fan of putting jam or gelee fillings between their beautiful macaroon shells. – Whisky Walnut: I love this one, almost as much as the salted caramel. Street Kitchen Food Market Vienna

The first Street Kitchen Food Market took place in Vienna last Thursday and Friday. As far as I know other cities have had their fair share of food festivals for many years, but Vienna is a bit slow with some things… Anyway, I was quite happy to have almost 50 booths to choose from. It was very crowded as I assumed as ticket prices were only EUR 2 per person. In addition lines formed in front of certain stalls and blocked the way and sight for many people. I would recommend pre-painted lines on the floor next time, or at least just tape to show people how to queue properly. Viennese aren’t exactly fond of waiting for food nor used to queuing for anything… prices were high, portions were small, and still I felt the urge to devour half the offerings of the market as two days weren’t much. In the end there were stalls I could have done without and stalls I should have queued for. But let’s see first what I have photographed with my iPhone (in my total laziness): So my first stop was the stall of Wiener Honig as I was interested in their coconut honey. Unfortunately it was sold out and will only come back in a couple of months :-( Ok, whatever… the next thing on my list was a burger by Fisch-art. Since the line was so long I decided to go with two instead… Triple Cheese Surf ‘n Turf as well as the Juicy one with scallop and bacon. I actually liked the one with scallop and bacon better than the regular with shrimp. The burgers were pretty delicious, but I wished they had fries… and the beef was too peppery for my liking. My favorite is still the Shake Shack Shackburger overall. During the long wait for Fisch-art I sneaked up to Macaroom‘s stall as my boyfriend held the place in the line. As it was pretty late (8PM?) only 3 flavors of 15 remained, but luckily all 3 were ones I wanted to try anyway. And since they were so good I came again on the next day. A lot earlier this time and took 1 of each flavor… more on that in the next blog post. Before we left on Thursday I also tried a beef heart skewer, a cunapé and chicha morada at Lima56, a stall with Peruvian dishes. The beef heart was a bit too tough, nothing like the tender one I had at Okra many months ago. But the drink was really yummy, too bad it was so small. And finally I tried a small...

Flying Frühstück at Labstelle

When I saw a couple of pics of Labstelle on various blogs I got interested in trying something there. That way I also got to know their “Flying Frühstück”, where they serve you various breakfast dishes as well as lunch. It is recommended to reserve 2 and a half hours for it, but at the end we were there for 3.5 hours… The first thing you get is three sorts of bread, butter, apricot jam and a red beet spread. The butter is a wee bit hard for the soft brioche, so you shouldn’t start with that… but once you managed to get it on the bread with jam it is pretty good. The red beet spread is quite interesting as it reminds me a bit of berry yogurt, but with red beet. 5min later a small selection of cheese and meats arrived. The meat variation is solid, tasting good, but not too special. I think there could have been a bit more cheese than one sort, but there were a lot more courses to follow. So here comes some kind of ham on goat cheese topped with Sauerkraut. I actually liked it for its freshness. The size of a few bites was just right for this one. Then came a piece of meat in aspic with a few pickled veggies. I liked that one as well, but still nothing to blow me off my feet. Then followed a goose liver mousse with elderberry jam. Not bad, especially with some bread. But from the looks of it you could have thought this is dessert… so one of the servers actually messed up the sequence of the dishes from us and the neighbouring table. My lucky bf got a second serving of this as a result. Next up was a dried ham with potato mash mousse and spinach. I think I have a thing for potato mash. This airy mousse version of a mash was heavenly! Could have gobbled up a lot more of this and was sad once I reached the ham and spinach… anyway, classic scrambled eggs followed. Cooked just right, no frills. Then a wild garlic risotto with cream cheese followed. Not bad either, but by that time I was so full I wished the portion was smaller. But that was just the beginning of the lunch courses. A small portion of Sauerkraut and sausages followed. Again, good classic, but not spectacular. Another meaty dish followed: Some pork with classic potato mash and mushrooms. Liked the mushrooms the most! And finally came the dessert. Chocolate cake with pears and a small granola yogurt.
